Door to Door Sellers Active Again

Alert message sent 04/11/2021 13:35:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Please be on the alert following reports of aggressive door to door sellers who were active around the Gloucester, Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury areas yesterday, Wednesday 3rd November.

Police received reports from Highnam, Rudford, Hartpury, Norton, Longford and Stroud Road and Reservoir Road in Gloucester during the hours of daylight.

In some of these incidents the seller became very rude and aggressive if the householders did not purchase anything from them.

These door to door sellers are often from out of county and normally offer items for sale there and then.  Yesterday’s visitors claimed to be from the Middlesbrough area and they were offering household cleaning products, such as dusters, for sale.  They also claimed to be ex-servicemen or reformed offenders seeking employment elsewhere.

A pedlar's certificate is always required in order to sell door to door, and this must be issued by the police for the area in which they live and they must produce it if asked by a resident.

It is not rude to say “No” and to be firm with these callers if you do not wish to buy anything, in fact there is no requirement for you to answer the door at all to them. A bright yellow ‘No Cold Caller’ sticker attached to your letter box may just deter them from knocking on your door in the first place.  These stickers are available from your Neighbourhood Watch Office at Hucclecote Police Station. Just call 01452 752086, provide your name and address and one or more will be sent to you.  Alternatively you can reply to this email with the required detail.

You are asked to contact the police on 101 if these callers appear in your area to allow officers to check them out.  If their behaviour or demeanour gives rise for concern or you feel intimidated or threatened then please dial 999.
