Gloucester courier fraud series continues

Alert message sent 13/09/2021 13:33:00

Information sent on behalf of Gloucestershire Constabulary

Gloucester residents are still receiving telephone calls from bogus police officers. In the latest reports, scammers are claiming to be "DC Matt PHILLIPS" "DC Dennis Matthews” and "DC Anthony GERALD” from "BEARLANDS POLICE STATION". The scammers state that the victim's bank card has been used in SAINSBURYS or TESCO to purchase electrical items. Further telephone calls follow, whereby the victim is asked to "assist in a covert investigation". The victim is instructed to withdraw cash or purchase Euros. The fraudster then tells the victim that this money is counterfeit and must be handed over to a "police courier". A 72 year-old victim was tricked into handing over almost £6000 in cash recently. If you have elderly friends, neighbours, or relatives, please warn them of this scam. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up the phone and then use a different telephone to contact the police via 101. If you don't have access to another telephone, contact a friend or relative first, to ensure that the fraudster has not stayed on the line.
