Further Courier Fraud Attempts in Gloucester

Alert message sent 15/07/2021 11:58:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Please be aware that fraudsters are continuing to target Gloucester residents.  Police have had three further reports in the past week of persons pretending to be locally based Police Officers.

The false names used this time were “DC Sarah Evans from Gloucestershire police” and “DC Gardner from Bearland Police Station”.

The latest targeted victims were all in their 70s and were contacted on their home phones and told that the police were “trying to arrest someone at the bank for counterfeit money”.  They were told to provide their mobile telephone numbers.  The suspect then called them on their mobile and told them to go to the bank and await further instructions while keeping the mobile phone line open to the fraudsters whilst at the bank.

Thankfully the latest would-be victims were wise to the scam and reported the calls to the police.

In each case the fraudster did know the name of the person they were calling, and may also have known some other personal details.  If you receive a call of this type please do not assume they are genuine and be very cautious about providing any further information.  If you believe the call to be a scam then end the call immediately and report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or online at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
