Door to Door Salesmen  -  Nottingham Knockers

This is a reminder that these people are out and about around Cheltenham again
They are groups of door to door salesman knocking on doors offering tea towels, dish cloths etc. for sale.
They are bused in on mass in a van and then attempt to sell their wares by knocking on doors, and are known colloquially as ‘Nottingham Knockers’ as they come from out of the county and a lot of the time from that area. They have various stories to tell i.e. just out of prison/ex serviceman getting back on their feet etc. etc. in an effort to make you feel sorry for them and but their products
Legally they must be in possession of a ‘Pedlars Certificate’ which must be signed by the Police for the area in which they live and they must produce it if asked.
It is generally suspected that they are responsible for burglaries etc. but the actual proof of this is very thin if any at all; but it has been found that many such persons have previous convictions for various offences.
It is not rude to say No and shut the door on these people, in fact there is no requirement for you to answer the door at all to them. A ‘No Cold Caller’ sticker on your letter box may have the desired effect, available from your Neighbourhood Watch Officer.
I would ask that if you get any such callers you report it in via 101 as we would like to know that they are about, but if they are getting aggressive with you, should you not wish to purchase any of their overpriced items, then please call 999 and the Police will attend and check them out etc. and deal as necessary.
An alternative to 101 (as we appreciate that it can take time to get a reply) is to report the matter on line at:- but this is not to be used in an emergency such as someone becoming aggressive – dial 999.
Thank you and this is the end of the message – Please Stay Safe
