Door to Door Salesmen

Alert message sent 12/06/2020 17:59:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

The Gloucestershire Constabulary has received a number of reports from several areas around the city, that there have been groups of door to door salesmen knocking on doors offering tea towels, dish cloths and other basic household items for sale.

These callers are often transported into our area from other parts of the country, and then attempt to sell their wares by knocking on doors. They are frequently called ‘Nottingham Knockers’, and will have various stories to tell, such as they are just out of prison and are attempting to get back on their feet. Their aim is to gain your sympathy thereby persuading you to help them by buying their products

Legally, they must be in possession of a ‘Pedlars Certificate’, which must be issued by the police force for the area in which they live, and they must produce it if asked by an officer or by you if they offer you goods to buy there and then.  Failure to do so could be an offence for which they could be fined up to £200.

It is often suspected that they are responsible for burglaries and other crimes but the actual evidence for this is limited.  It has be found however, that some of these door step traders do have previous convictions for various offences.  They can become aggressive if purchases are not made.

It is not rude to say “No” and to be firm with these people, in fact there is no requirement for you to answer the door at all to them. A bright yellow ‘No Cold Caller’ sticker attached to your letter box may just deter them from knocking on your door in the first place.  These stickers are available from your Neighbourhood Watch Office at Hucclecote Police Station or just reply to this email and request some.

We have had a number of calls this week that these door to door traders have been active with the Barnwood and Hucclecote most recently visited..  You are asked to contact the police on 101 if they appear in your area so that officers may check them out.  If their behaviour or demeanour gives rise for concern then please dial 999.

As an alternative to 101 please consider reporting the matter on line at:
