Gloucestershire Constabulary has become aware that there is an increase of incidents being reported in the Newent area involving youths on E scooters riding in a dangerous manner. If the police see and stop these individuals their scooters will be seized as they are not permitted to be used in public roads or areas unless you rent one on the city schemes where they are supplied by councils and you pay to use them. You will have to show a valid driving license in many cases to do this. THE LAW E scooters and fall under the definition of “powered transporters” along with segways, hoverboards, go-peds and Uwheels. This automatically makes them illegal to use on public highways As they fall under this definition they must comply with the legal definition of a motor vehicle. If these are used on a public highway they must have sufficent insurance, tax, registration and licensing, along with protective equipment. It also makes them illegal to use in places accessable to the public such as car parks, public squares, privately owned roads and industrial estates, along with places set aside for pedestrians such as bridleways, pavements etc. Currently these can only be used on private land with land owners permission. If you see anyone riding an E scooter around Newent then please let you local officer know.
